Thomas did not go back to visit James. Over the coming week James made a slow but successful recovery. The wounds he had received still rendered him incapable of getting out of bed. He was still quite sore. The Doctor came over to check on him each morning to monitor his progress. A nurse had also been called in to watch over him. She fed and bathed him. Maurice assisted in trimming his moustache.

Geraldine and the head butler and housemaids were his only visitors. Christina and Lorenza were busy preparing for their Christmas holidays in the country. They were all going to celebrate Christmas with Joseph's side of the family in Fairfield. Geraldine and Lorenza were looking forward to painting by the waters of Prospect Creek and on the lawns of Cambridge House. The Stimsons had extended an invitation to paint pictures of their home and members of their family.

Geraldine relayed all this to James who in turn felt guilty that he had been delaying their family plans. Geraldine had reassured him. What was important was his recovery so that he could join his family, who lived in Melbourne, for Christmas.
